RCD Testing

An RCD Check — Why it is Vital for your Safety?
A Residual Current Device (RCD) is a piece of equipment that plays a crucial role in protecting people and property against faults in electrical circuits and appliances. As such, it is essential that the equipment works properly at all times, and regular RCD testing will ensure this is the case.
Testing is necessary to prevent electric shocks that can cause injury or worse. It is also often a legal requirement for many kinds of electrical installations and can be used to detect faulty or incorrect equipment and to prevent fires. Read More
What is RCD Testing and How Does it Work?
RCDs are essential for electricity circuits and various appliances, protecting against earth leakage faults that can cause serious problems. They therefore play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and safety of those systems and preventing injury to users.
When installed in a circuit, an RCD has the neutral and live wires passing through it. When the circuit is operating correctly, the current passing through each wire will be the same, and the magnetic fields created by the wires will also be equal. If, however, the neutral wire current and its magnetic field differ from the live current and field, this indicates the current is flowing incorrectly. To prevent consequent faults and danger, the circuit is broken and so electricity no longer passes.
The RCD can be reset by pressing a button, but if the fault persists, the circuit will continue to be broken, and the problem needs to be rectified. Different types of RCDs are available for varying types of current and equipment, and all need to be tested to ensure they work correctly.
Understanding what is RCD testing is important for property owners. RCDs should generally be tested every three months or in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations or compliance standards. However, this period can be influenced by the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.
Complying with RCD Testing Requirements
To ensure your electrical equipment is working correctly and you are protected from danger, our qualified electricians will undertake thorough testing. Meeting RCD testing requirements includes:
- ensuring that the electrical installation is fully energised
- if required, disconnecting the load
- choosing the appropriate test type depending on the circuit or device
- using the test button on the RCD to simulate a fault and ensure the power is cut off
- conducting a visual check for damage or deterioration
- employing a specialised loop or RCD tester to ensure the tripping time of the RCD meets required standards when a test current is applied
- testing at different power levels (50%, 100%, 500%) and at different phase angles (0° and 180°) to ensure correct functionality at varying AC waveforms.
RCDs have a limited lifespan, so regular RCD check procedures by a qualified electrician are necessary to ensure they are still compliant with regulations and are working properly. Do not take risks with electrical circuits and appliances that can cause serious damage and injury. Instead, contact us at Florance Electrical to arrange a regular check and ensure peace of mind.
