What is RCD Testing and How Does it Work?

When installed in a circuit, an RCD has the neutral and live wires passing through it. When the circuit is operating correctly, the current passing through each wire will be the same, and the magnetic fields created by the wires will also be equal. If, however, the neutral wire current and its magnetic field differ from the live current and field, this indicates the current is flowing incorrectly. To prevent consequent faults and danger, the circuit is broken and so electricity no longer passes.

The RCD can be reset by pressing a button, but if the fault persists, the circuit will continue to be broken, and the problem needs to be rectified. Different types of RCDs are available for varying types of current and equipment, and all need to be tested to ensure they work correctly.
